A-line dress with draped bodice

4.5/5

An interesting pattern manipulation gives a draped bodice that is very trendy and flattering - in this dress it is combined with a flared skirt, but you can pair it with a straight or full one too or with pants for a jumpsuit.

To draft the pattern, start from a basic dress with darts - you can check how we do it here.

Any light to medium weight with a drapey hand is suitable for this project - from crepe to satin, to cotton or viscose.

Step 1

Trace a copy of your basic dress and cut through waistline to separate bodice and skirt.

Shorten back and front skirts above the knee, then flare 4 to 6cm from sides, blending at hipline or above.

Step 2

On skirts, square down from dart apexes to hemline and cut through the line.

Close skirt darts opening a matching volume at hemline.

Step 3

See that darts are manipulated into the flare. Make sure the volume added on back and front is even.
