Asymmetric draped skirt

Pattern characteristics: asymmetry, draped panel, pleats.

Style analysis: long skirt with a fixed wrap and draped panel as top layer.

Fabric: crepe, cady or other medium weight woven fabrics with soft and quite drapey hand.

Step 1

Start from a basic skirt with 2cm wearing ease on waist and hip circumferences*, adjust length to ground.

*if you’re new to our method, you can try our free pre-course to create a basic skirt pattern on your own measurements, then you can follow this tutorial to turn the basic pattern into this style!

On front and back:

  • take in 2cm at knee level
  • take in 2cm at hemline and connect points (red line)
  • blend to hip level (light blue line)
  • lastly, mirror front to have it full, including the new side seam.
Step 2

On front, draw the inner front part which is left side:

  • start from right side 5 to 8cm above hip and draw a curve ending 2cm past center front around knee level, then square down to hemline (the rounder the curve and the higher the point where the vertical line starts, the more open the slit)
  • trace left front including darts and keeping center front as grainline.
Step 3

Now work on right front:

  • draw a balloon shape that starts from left hip and extends past left side seam by 30 to 40cm
  • continue the curve and extend the shape by 15 to 25cm past hemline, blending to original side seam at right edge
  • trace the whole right front skirt, including darts and original center front.

On the new piece, draw a slash line starting from each dart apex and ending to the bottom left section of the balloon volume, as shown.
