Asymmetric dress with buttons

4.5/5

Let's draft the pattern for this interesting dress. Its dart manipulation is into an asymmetric volume held in position by side buttons - it's a good pattern exercise.

An additional detail is the high-low hemline.

You can sew it in any fabric, from scuba to stretch crepe or cady, to ponte or jersey. Just make sure to stabilize buttonhole area before opening them ;)

Step 1

To draft the pattern, start from a basic block with darts and appropriate ease to the fabric you use – we suggest minimum 4cm at bust for a stretch fabric, minimum 8cm for non stretch fabric.

Trace the full front, then draw slash line for side panel on right side and waist dart on it.

Step 2

Cut through slash line, separate main front piece and side panel, then draw some slash lines on main piece:

  • first, draw two lines from waist and 2or 3cm above it to left bust point
  • then, 2 or 3cm above previous point to right bust point
  • then, distribute evenly more lines in the waist to hip section.

Cut through first and last lines of lower section.

Step 3

Close waist dart on the waist to hip section and on the upper part.

Then cut through slash lines ending at bust points and close both shoulder darts.
