Asymmetric dress with gathers

4.5/5

Let's draft the pattern for this dress. It's quite a complex one as there are several details involved in the asymmetry, cutout and gathers - but it's going to be a very satisfying project.

To start, trace a full copy of your contoured block.

You can sew it in any light to medium weight fabric, better if it has some stretch - consider starting from a block with negative ease if you choose jersey or lycra.

Step 1

On front full copy, adjust length first.

Then reduce 2cm from each side at hemline, blending to zero at hipline.

Shorten left shoulder line to 5 or 6cm, then drop left armpit point by 1,5 or 2cm and redraw left armhole.

Create a 3 or 4cm wide shoulder strap for right side, ending in a V neckline.

Step 2

Highlight hipline, then draw the waistband line from hip line on left side seam towards center front. Upper line of waistband hits left side seam 3 or 4cm below waistline.

Step 3

Draw the cutout on left side starting from waistline and ending approx at waist dart.

On right side, draw the cup picking the coverage you prefer (we suggest at least 7cm above bust point and 8cm below, but it depends on your breast size), then draw the cutout at waist section matching measurement to left side.

Widen both waist darts so they are 3cm at underbust.
