Asymmetric dress with knot and flounce

4.5/5

Let's draft the pattern for this asymmetric dress. It features a dart manipulation into a knot, an asymmetric neckline, hem with flounce and deep side slit.

It is perfect for a summer party or night out!

Sew it in crepe, cady or other drapey fabrics.

To draft the pattern, start from a basic block with zero or very little wearing ease (2 to 4cm maximum on bust, waist and hip circumferences). Choose ease according to the fabric (if it stretches a bit or not) and on the effect you like more.

Step 1

Start from a copy of full back dress.

Draw the new neckline, shape center a bit at waist and taper at knee, then flare from center and sides.

Draw the new high-low hemline and a line parallel to it for flounce.

Step 2

Trace the separate pieces.

You get left and. right back dress, left and right ruffle/flounce.

Step 3

Now get a copy of full front and draw the new neckline first. On right side – where there’s no shoulder strap – widen shoulder dart by 1cm at neckline to keep dress tighter.

Taper the skirt at knee, flare it at bottom and draw the new hemline, slit and flounce line with the same measurements you used for back.

Lastly, draw the knot position at underbust and the slash lines for manipulating darts.
