Asymmetric skirt with yoke

Style analysis: sleek and modern skirt with asymmetrical design. It features a high slit on one side, a high waistband/yoke fitting snugly around the hips, the curved hemline is longer on one side than the other. There weaves at the longer part of hemline, meaning that volume is added to that side only.

Fabric: the material appears to be smooth and flowy, draping beautifully around the body. We suggest satin or crepe, in silk, polyester or viscose.

Step 1

Trace back and front basic skirt separate and make sure they have identical measurements (usually back is slightly smaller than front, so widen back and reduce front to balance them). Adjust darts too if needed.

Lengthen to ground.

If you’re new to our method, you can try our free pre-course to create a basic skirt pattern on your own measurements, then you can follow this tutorial to turn the basic pattern into this style!

Step 2

Take front and mirror it to have the full shape.

Draw the waistband/yoke line parallel to waistline and 15 to 18cm below it (notice that the line is slightly curved upwards at the edges).

Draw the longer part of hemline at ankles at right side seam (about 8cm above ground length), then flare by 8 to 12cm, blending to zero at yoke.

Draw the curved hemline to yoke on left side seam.

Step 3

Cut through the new hemline and yoke line to separate pieces.

Lengthen or shorten darts so that the apex sits on yoke bottom line, then tape them closed.

Draw slash lines on skirt:

  • one slash line is skirt center
  • one slash line is original side seam on right side
  • last slash line is halfway between original and new right side seam.

Cut through the slash lines.
