Asymmetric tiered dress

4.5/5

Let's see how to draft the pattern for this interesting dress.

It features gathers in bodice and skirt and a fitted waistband that enhances the silhouette.

Start from a basic block with darts and little wearing ease, as 8cm on bust circumference, 4cm on waist one, 2cm at hips.

Grab a lightweight cotton, linen or viscose and you're ready!

Step 1

Start by making a copy of front bodice. Draw the dolman sleeve by lowering 1cm high point shoulder, raising by 1cm the shoulder tip and redrawing the whole shoulder line 8-10cm longer.

Drop the armhole by 5cm, draw a perpendicular outward by 1,5cm and draw the sleeve.

Step 2

Draw the sleeve also on back bodice.

Drop the armhole by 5cm, draw a perpendicular outward by 1,5cm as done on front, but raise the whole shoulder line by 2cm and extend it by the same measurement you used on front.

Step 3

Add the skirt part to back bodice. Flare it by 6-10cm at hem.

Mirror the whole dress block so you have it full (left+right parts).

Draw the ‘horizontal’ slash lines for tiers as you see in the image.

Draw the slash line in center back to insert the zipper and discard from this part 1-1,5cm to shape the middle section/waistband.

Step 4

Cut through the lines. You get:

  • left and right back bodices (erase darts from these, as they will be absorbed from gathers)
  • left and right back waistband
  • middle and bottom tiers.
