Audrey Hepburn’s little black dress

4.5/5

Let's draft together the pattern of this iconic little black dress, designed by Givenchy for Audrey Hepburn in the amazing Breakfast at Tiffany's movie.

Any slightly structured fabric would work, a heavy silk satin (duchesse), taffeta or silk bends.

A layer of interlining (lightweight fusible, or even better a non fusible one as organza) should be added at least to the neckline to support it.

Step 1

Start from a basic block with darts with fitted bodice and non fitted skirt, adding 6-10cm ease at the hip and keeping the same measurement at the waist and hem.

Separate bodice and skirt.

Step 2

On back bodice, discard the dart from center back and side seam. Then, draw the neckline.

On front bodice, draw the neckline and armhole and redraw the waist dart shaping it at the underbust to make it fitted.

Erase the darts from the skirt pieces.

Step 3

Trace the bodice pieces: back collar and bodice, front bodice.

Prepare front bodice for manipulating the dart: close the one at the neckline and cut through the waist one.
