Bustier dress with side slit

4.5/5

Let's draft the pattern for this interesting dress. It includes lots of manipulations as the pattern has 16 pieces :) so it is important to be careful at tracing and be accurate when cutting them out.

Start by choosing a medium weight denim and tracing a copy of your contoured dress (darted block with zero wearing ease).

Step 1

Trace a copy of front and back, highlight waistline and draw a parallel 3 to 4cm above it to create the waistband.

Cut through both lines and separate bodice, waistband and skirt.

Step 2

Make the dart 3cm wide all the way through the waistband, then on back redraw the dart and draw the new neckline passing through its apex. Draw also back shoulder strap 2 to 3cm wide.

On front, make dart 3cm wide on waistband and on bodice up to underbust level, then draw underbust slash line slanted upwards in direction to center front. Draw the neckline, shoulder strap and armhole matching back measurements.
Widen shoulder dart by 1cm at neckline.

Step 3

Cut through all the new lines to get:

  • center back bodice
  • side back panel
  • back waistband
  • front upper bodice, merging back shoulder strap to front and manipulating dart volume all at underbust
  • front lower bodice, closing underbust dart and drawing 3 slash lines on it
  • front waistband.
