Style analysis: sleeveless midi dress with front buttoning and built-in collar. Flared skirt with horizontal cut at mid thigh and big pockets. Rounded princess cuts shape the dress. Trim details, fabric covered buttons and belt are classic and timeless details.
Fabric: twill, bouclé fabrics that allow to use matching trims to highlight details, or any other medium weight woven fabric. Woolens are also ok. We recommend adding lining (and interlining if your fabric has a very open weave).
Draw a basic dress with shoulder dart and 10cm ease at bust circumference.
Our method for drafting made to measure basic blocks is fully explained in our basic blocks course/module 1.
Trace back and front separate and adjust lenght to mid calf or desired measurement.
Flare 10 to 14cm from sides, blending to zero at hipline.
Draw a line parallel to hemline at mid thigh (approx 15 to 20cm above knee line). Cut through the slash line and separate back upper and bottom part and front upper and bottom part.
Get front and square down from bust point.
Draw a rounded cut from armhole 5 to 7cm above armpit to waistline, then to hemline. Redraw waist dart on this slash line and erase it from original place.
Draw a slash line from bust point to rounded slash line.
Cut through the lines and separate center front from side front panel.
Pivot at bust point to close shoulder dart. Open a matching volume half at hemline and half at side panel line where slash line was (open approx 1cm here). Then redraw armhole reducing by the new amount, or -better- ease it through the seam.
Merge side panel to main center front piece at bottom point, spacing the pieces by 2 to 3cm at top, to have room for adding seam allowances on both sides.
