Caftan dress with wide sleeves

4.5/5

Let's draft together the pattern for this amazing caftan - it has a simple sheath silhouette and statement sleeves.

To draft the pattern, start from a basic block with bust dart only and 10 to 14cm ease at bust circumference - if you wonder how to create your own made to measure and perfectly fitting basic blocks and you want to learn more about wearing ease.... we have a course starting on May 30th on these topics - check it out here!

Pick a lightweight, drapey fabric as satin and start sewing your new dress!

Step 1

Trace a copy of your basic block and the matching sleeve.

Adjust the length first, and make the sleeve wrist circumference matching to the bicep one.

On front bodice, draw a slash line at underbust to manipulate shoulder dart.

Cut through the line from center front to bust point and close shoulder dart in the upper section opening a matching volume at underbust.

Step 2

Get back and sleeve.

Cut the sleeve in the middle, then merge it to back to create the dolman sleeve.

Match the sleeve cap/armhole notches and redraw the new shape rounding at shoulder and armpit.

Step 3

Trace a copy of the new back with built-in sleeve.
