Cocktail dress with gathered skirt

4.5/5

Let's draft together the pattern for this nice cocktail dress. It features a fitted bodice with spaghetti straps and a balloon skirt with double gathers.

It would be great if sewn in a stiff fabric as silk taffeta or faille, shantung or ottoman. You can also create a more casual version with cotton or linen.

Start from a fitted block with darts and small wearing ease.

Step 1

Start from the skirt.

Adjust the length first, then flare 3-4cm from side seams. Make darts even on back and front.

Lastly, square down from dart apex to hem. Cut through the lines.

Step 2

Close waist darts and open the matching volume at hem.

Step 3

Pick a point on side seam approx 15cm down from waistline and draw the slash lines:

  • slightly curved upward towards center back
  • straight and then angled down in front.
