Corset dress with balloon sleeve

4.5/5

To draft the pattern for this dress, start from a basic block with darts and zero wearing ease as you would do for a corset. You might want to check the corset construction here, as the underbust is shaped with the same technique.

You will also need a basic sleeve.

Use a non stretch, medium weight satin to sew a similar version. Stiffen the bodice part with fusible interlining or organza and use the seam allowances to create hidden bonecases.

Step 1

Start from a basic block with darts and zero wearing ease.

Cut through the waist line to separate bodice and skirt.

Step 2

Focus on bodice:

  • draw the underbust line (below bust line, either measure the distance on you or half of brest distance minus 1,5cm)
  • on underbust line, adjust underbust circumference by shaping the side seams and front waist dart until you reach the right measurement
  • draw the new neckline by dropping 1cm at armpit.

You might want to check the corset construction here, as the underbust is shaped with the same technique.

Step 3

On front bodice, widen the shoulder dart by 1cm at neckline to keep it tighter to the chest.

Draw the style lines for front panels. They are slightly slanted inward to center of waistline.
