Cowl neck asymmetric top

Style analysis: this top features a simple yet elegant design. It has thin spaghetti straps and a slight drape detail at the neckline, giving it a soft, feminine look. It also has an asymmetric panel construction and back is fully open.

Fabric: any lightweight fabric with or without stretch, as viscose, crepe, satin, but even jersey or lycra would work. Start from a block with zero ease if you work with wovens, and from one with negative ease if you go for a knit.

Step 1

Trace your block with darts (and zero or negative ease) up to 8cm below waistline.

Draw the new neckline on front:

  • start from center front 12 to 14cm above bust level
  • square across past the dart, up to 5cm before armhole
  • draw the new armhole quite flat ending 3 to 5cm below armpit.

Draw back at matching level at side seam, 5cm wide at top, then a slanted line to waist at side seam (you get something like a triangle).

Mirror front to have it full.

Step 2

Cut through the new neckline and merge the small back piece to front by matching armpit and waist points.

Draw the panel lines:

  • the line closer to side seam starts from armhole 6 to 8cm from armpit, crosses dart at underbust and ends at hemline in center front
  • the second slash line starts from right upper angle, passes through right bust point, crosses left waist dart above waist and ends at hemline 3 to 5cm before side seam.

Cut through the lines or trace copies of the 3 separate pieces.

Step 3

So you get something similar to this.

Tape darts closed on the two smaller pieces redrawing them as shown by red lines.

On bigger piece, tape right shoulder dart closed and close left underbust dart shifting its volume at left shoulder dart.
