Cross-front top

4.5/5

A very quick pattern for a short cross front top.

To draft it, start from a basic block with darts as small to zero wearing ease, depending on the fabric you want to use.

This top can be realized in any woven or knit fabric, so:

  • if fabric has no stretch, add 4cm ease to bust circumference
  • if fabric has stretch or is a knit, add 0cm ease (or even negative ease if you use jersey).

Step 1

Start tracing a copy of back and full front.

First, discard waist darts from sides.

Step 2

Then draw the new hemline, neckline and armhole on front and back.

Drop 1 to 2cm on side seam for armhole, and raise 2 to 3cm for it along shoulder line.

Widen neckline by 5 to 6cm.

Cut through all lines to separate pieces.

Step 3

On front, draw a slash line from shoulder middle point to bust point.
Cut through slash line, close original shoulder line and manipulate the dart.

Draw also a back band that continues with front.

Step 4

Trace a copy of all pieces and on front mark pleats on shoulder dart.

Cut center back bodice and band on fold if you want no center back seam (so, if you have stretch fabric), otherwise add center back seam allowance for inserting a zipper.
