Draped dress with flounce

4.5/5

Let's draft together the pattern for this long dress. The very clean line is balance by a feminine front flounce. It's a simple yet very elegant dress that can be also shortened for a cocktail version.

Any light to medium weight drapey fabric will work great - our favorite option is silk crepe.

To draft the pattern, start from a fitted basic dress with darts and matching sleeve. Choose wearing ease according to the fabric you will use and the fit you like most.

Step 1

Trace a copy of front and back and lengthen both to the ground (use your trouser length).

Flare the hem slightly (5-8cm on each side).

On front, draw the V neckline approximately to bust height and draw the slash line to manipulate shoulder dart into a french one ending in side seam.

Step 2

Cut through the slash line and close shoulder dart. Trace copies of front and back with the flared hem and the new dart/neckline on front.

Step 3

Discard waist dart on front by shaping center front and side seam.

Reduce back dart by discarding from side seam the same amount taken on front, so the side slope is the same on both pieces.
