Draped dress with front knot

Style analysis: this evening gown has a unique design with fabric gathered at the waist, creating a central knot or twist that accentuates the waistline. It features also long, billowy sleeves that are slightly puffed and fitted at the cuffs with small buttons. The back of the dress is simpler, with a smooth finish and a long, elegant train that flows to the floor.

Overall, this gown is designed to make a statement with its bold color and intricate front detailing, suitable for a formal event or red carpet occasion.

Fabric: luxurious, shiny satin. Can be polyester or silk, or a blended one. It's also possible to use crepe or cady or other flowy and drapey lightweight fabrics.

Draft the pattern starting from a basic dress with darts and 8cm wearing ease at bust circ - you can learn our method for drafting perfectly made to measure basic blocks (contoured ones, and the ones with wearing ease) and for fitting them in our basic blocks course/module 1.

Step 1

Trace back and front separate, then adjust length to the ground.

Flare both of them by 20 to 30cm from side seams blending to zero at waist to hip section, then flare 50 to 80cm from center back blending to zero at hips, lengthen the new center back line by 30 to 50cm to create the train.

Draw back hemline starting at right angle from new center back line, then draw a curve in direction to side seam, blending to original hemline approx 15cm before center front.

Draw the slash line separating bodice from skirt: start in center back at waist and end at side seam 5 to 7cm above waist, then continue towards center front raising 1 to 2cm more. Make sure darts are 3cm wide at slash line on front.

Lastly, mirror front to have it full.

Step 2

Erase back dart and discard 2cm from center and 1cm from side seam. Blend to zero at hipline, nape point and armpit.

Step 3

Cut through the slash line to separate back bodice from back skirt.
