Dress with cape sleeves

Style analysis: midi dress with deep V neckline, center front seam and front slit. Dropped shoulders with short cape on back. Looks great with a betly, but you can wear it without or change it with a drawstring/elasticated waistband. It's possible to add in-seam pockets too.

Fabric: any light to medium weight fabric as shirting fabrics, cotton/linen, poly blend...

Draw a basic dress with shoulder dart and 14cm ease at bust circumference. Make sure the measurement you get (bust + ease) is at least 4cm bigger than your hip circumference, otherwise increase ease a bit or consider making your side seams slightly slanted outwards.

Our method for drafting made to measure basic blocks is fully explained in our basic blocks course/module 1.

Step 1

Trace front and back separate. You don’t need waist darts, as the dress side seam is straight from bust to hemline.

Draw 3 slash lines on front, all starting from bust point:

  • one line to shoulder midpoint
  • one line to armhole, 5 to 7cm above armpit
  • one line to side seam 4 to 5cm below armpit.

Cut through all the lines, then tape shoulder dart closed and distribute evenly the volume in the new darts.

Step 2

So that your new front looks like this.

Step 3

Now work on back:

  • raise neckline and shoulder line by 2cm
  • lengthen new shoulder line by 16 to 20cm outwards.
