Dress with gathers and cutout

4.5/5

A super sexy midi dress: to draft the pattern, start from a dress block with darts and zero wearing ease.

You can sew it in silk velvet or velveteen as shown in the photo or you can pick a light to medium weight woven fabric with a drapey hand.

Step 1

Trace a copy of basic front and back with full length, then mirror front for the asymmetric style.

Adjust length to 3/4, then taper 1,5cm from hemline at sides, blending to zero to hipline.

On back, reduce waist dart by 2cm and shape center back by a matching amount.

Step 2

Draw the new neckline on back and front dropping armpit point by 2 to 4cm.

Center back neckline should be 5 to 10cm above waistline.

On front, widen both shoulder darts by 1cm at the new neckline – this makes neckline tighter to chest.

Step 3

Cut through the new neckline and shoulder dart lines, then draw the front cutout lines from center front original neckline to waistline on left side. The greater distance in between the lines is at bust level and is about 4 to 5cm.

Cut through the lines to separate left and right front and discard the cutout.
