Dress with side pleats

4.5/5

Style analysis: midi dress with waist cut and asymmetric pleats on bodice and skirt.

Fabric: any medium weight woven fabric as crepe or cady, or medium weight knit as ponte.

Draft the pattern from a basic block with darts and 6cm ease at bust (for knits) or 10cm (for wovens).
Our method for drafting perfectly made to measure basic blocks and for fitting them is fully explained in our basic blocks course/module 1.

Step 1

Trace back and front separate, then adjust length to mid calf and flare by 6 to 10cm from side seams, blending to zero at hips or hip to waist area.

Mirror both back and front to have the full pattern, then trace sleeve too.
Shorten sleeve to 5 to 7cm past armpit level.

Step 2

Draw slash lines:

  • on back skirt, square down from dart apexes to hemline
  • on front bodice, draw a line from right bust point to center front at waist
  • on front skirt, square down from dart apexes to hemline
  • you see one more line on front skirt..ignore it for the moment 🙂

Cut through waist lines and vertical slash lines.

Step 3

Separate bodices from skirts.

On both skirts, close waist darts and open a matching volume at hemline.
