Drop shoulder shirt dress

4.5/5

Let's draft the pattern for this shirt dress.

It features drop shoulder, oversized pockets and cuffs and it is fitted at the waist due to some pleats.

Start from a basic block without darts and a matching basic sleeve.

This version is stitched in cotton popeline - but any shirt fabric will work, or you can sew different versions in light to medium weight fabrics. The same pattern could also be used to sew something like a trenchcoat!

Step 1

Start from a copy of your basic block.

On back and front do as follows:

  • raise shoulder line by 1cm and extend it outwards by 6cm
  • drop armhole by 6cm
  • widen from side seam by at least 3cm (or more if you like)
  • redraw both armholes – notice that the new curve is much flatter than the original one.
Step 2

Focus on shoulder tip: Shape the shoulder sligthly by dropping 1cm on back and 2cm on front.

Redraw the shoulder line on both pieces.
