Evening dress with cutouts and drape

Style analysis: long dress with slit, side cutouts, front knot and drape. Advanced patternmaking techniques, definitely a challenging project!

Fabric: light to medium weight jersey or other knits (stretch is needed), medium weight lycra.

Draft the pattern starting from a contoured block (our method for drafting it -made to measure - is included in our basic blocks course/module 1), adjust length to ground first, then follow these steps.

Step 1

First, trace front to have it full.

Highlight hip line and extend wist darts downwards so that they reach hipline.

Draw a reverse V shape from center front at waist to side seams 7 to 9cm below waistline – keep darts closed in a temporary way to draw lines.

Step 2

Highlight underbust line and draw a V shaped line from center front at waist to 3 to 5cm above underbust – this way you identify side cutouts.

Taper 2 to 5cm at hemline.

Step 3

Draw an asymmetric V shape as shown by green lines, then square down from right dart apex.

Trace a copy of the whole skirt shape and cut through the lines.
