Evening dress with front cutout

4.5/5

Let's draft the pattern for this sexy evening dress - it is perfect for the upcoming holiday season!

It features a mermaid long skirt and a bodice with deep neckline, front cutout and twist! The pattern is very interesting and can be adapted to a variety of different designs!

To draft the pattern, start from a basic block with darts and zero wearing ease. We suggest to sew the dress in heavy satin or other medium weight fabric: don't pick anything too soft otherwise the skirt will not hold the shape, nor something too stiff or the knot will be too thick.

Step 1

First. draw the full length dress with zero ease. Then draw a parallel line 10cm above knee line and taper 2cm inwards blending to zero at hips, then flare at least 10 to 15cm at hemline. Flare 15 to 25cm in center back for the train.

Mirror front, then cut through waistline to separate bodice and skirt.

Step 2

See all the separate pieces.

On back skirt, square down from dart apex to hemline.

Step 3

Still on back skirt, manipulate waist dart reducing it by 1 or 1,5cm and discard the matching amount from center back.
