Evening dress with side flounces

Style analysis: long dress, mermaid gown, shaped with vertical princess cuts where flounces in a contrasting color are inserted. Black and white would also be super cool. It's possible to recreate it in a shorter length to be used for a cocktail or a ceremony.

Suitable fabrics are cady, crepe, satin, but un unusual option could also be lightweight leather or denim! We would prefer something with a bit of stretch for more ease in movements.

Draft the pattern by tracing a copy of your basic dress with darts - our method for drafting it in included in our basic blocks course/module 1.

Step 1

Trace back and front separate, then adjust the length.

Draw a line 10cm above knees and taper 2 to 4cm inwards at this line.

Flare 8 to 16cm from side seams at hemline. Redraw side seam from the new hemline point, to the tapered one, blending at hipline.

Step 2

Reduce back waist dart to 2cm width and take in 2cm from center back at waist. Blend at nape point and hip level.

Step 3

On both back and front draw the new neckline: start from front by choosing the coverage you like – we suggest 7 to 12cm above bust level. Square across to 3 or 4cm past shoulder dart, then draw a soft curve to armpit point.

Repeat for back by squaring from center back, then changing direction for armhole 3 to 4cm before original armhole. The corner where line changes will be where strap sits.
