Flared dress with cape sleeves

4.5/5

Style analysis: formal midi dress with princess cuts that shape bodice and add volume to skirt. Statement sleeves are shaped as a cape starting at princess cut and pleated to add fullness.

Fabric: medium weight crepe, faille, taffeta or something similar - some weight is needed to hold sleeve shape and skirt volume.

You can add lining, or you can sew a winter version with a medium weight woolen fabric.

Draw a basic dress with shoulder dart and 10cm ease at bust circumference.
Our method for drafting made to measure basic blocks is fully explained in our basic blocks course/module 1.

Step 1

Trace back and front separate and adjust length to 10cm above ankles or desired measurement.

Flare at least 10 to 16cm from both side seams and from center back, blending to zero at waist to hip section.

On front, measure 4cm from high shoulder point along shoulder line and connect to bust point. Cut through the line and manipulate shoulder dart.

Step 2

Take in 2cm from center back at waist blending to zero to skirt flare and to shoulder blades area. Balance the taken volume by reducing waist drt.

On both back and front, square down from waist dart bottom apex.

Step 3

Add at least 8 to 10cm on each side of the lines coming from darts to add volume to skirt.

Draw the princess line also on upper back: pick a point 4cm from high shoulder point along shoulder line and connect to waist dart upper apex.

Trace copies of the 4 separate panels.
