Flared dress with cutouts

Style analysis: midi dress featuring a fitted bodice with wide straps and a square neckline. There is a keyhole cutout just below the bust, which is accentuated by a tie detail. The waist area is cinched, and the skirt falls in a flowing, asymmetrical hemline. The overall style of the dress is elegant and summery, suitable for casual outings or beachwear.

Fabric: silk satin or blended material that gives a shiny and smooth appearance, viscose or polyester are also possible options.

Draft the pattern starting from a basic dress with darts and zero to 4cm wearing ease at bust, depending on the fabric (no ease if fabric has some stretch) and the way you prefer it to fit. Our method for drafting perfectly made to measure basic blocks (contoured ones, and the ones with wearing ease) and for fitting them in our basic blocks course/module 1.

Step 1

Trace back and front separate and adjust length.

Flare from side seams and center front and back by at least 10 to 16cm, blending to zero at hips.

Square down from front and back waist dart bottom apexes to hemline.

Step 2

On both front and back flare by 10 to 16cm on either side of the lines coming from darts – this way you created a princess cut on skirt and flared the single panels.

Step 3

On both back and front, highlight underbust line.
