Flared dress with gathers and puffed sleeve

4.5/5

Let's draft together the pattern for this trendy summer dress.

It has a lot of interesting details: the skirt is a flattering A line and has a side slit, bodice has gathers at neckline and puffed sleeve is elasticated.

To draft the pattern, start from a contoured bodice and a matching sleeve.

You can sew the dress in any lightweight fabric: cotton or viscose for an easy to wear option, silk for something a bit more special.

Step 1

Start from a copy of your basic block and adjust length to 3/4.

Mark the waistline as slash line and cut through it.

Separate bodices and skirts.

Step 2

On back and front skirt, make sure darts are identical in length and width, then square down from dart apexes.

Cut through the slash lines to manipulate dart volume.

Step 3

Close waist darts on the skirt and open a matching volume (or more, according to the style you like – more flared skirt or more straight) at hem.

Widen the skirt from side seam also.

Repeat for front skirts with same measurements (the side seams should have matching slope).
