Flared high waisted jeans

Pattern characteristics: high waist jeans, ultra wide flare, zipper fly and front pocket construction.

Style analysis: high waisted trousers with fitted leg at thigh and dramatic flare. Classic jeans characteristics as straight waistband, rounded pocket and coin pocket on front, zipper fly.

Fabric: medium weight denim (with or without stretch depending on your preferences), other medium weight woven fabrics (twill, corduroy, velvet...).

Step 1

To draft this pattern start from a basic pant pattern – our method for drafting it made to measure is included in basic blocks course – module 3.

You can work this style on a block with ease or without it, depending on your fabric and favorite fit. In the photo, the jeans have most likely 2 to 3cm ease at waist, 4 to 5cm at hips and 1,5cm vertical ease at crotch.

Trace front and back, then identify the narrowest point at thigh 12 to 16cm above knee level and take in 2,5 to 5cm from side seam and inseam (depending on how tight you want the pant to be – measure on yourself and reduce width accordingly).

Flare hemline by adding 6 to 10cm on side seam and inseam, and if you like the effect you can also add a couple cm extra length for those above the shoe horizontal wrinkles.

Step 2

Redraw leg shape starting from crotch point and hip point. Make sure the narrower section at thigh is not a point but a 4 to 6cm wide section, to have a smooth transition in between thigh shape and bell bottom.

Erase front dart discarding it from side seam.

Make sure you traced also the waistband, and partition it with notches splitting front – back – back – front – fly (3cm wide).

Step 3

Focus on front upper part:

  • first draw the pocket opening (green line) dropping about 10cm from waist at side and widening 12cm from side waist towards center front. Start at right angle from both edges, then draw a curve in middle section
  • draw pocket bag (blue line), squaring down from waist 5 to 6cm from center front up to hip level or a couple cm above it, then draw a very flat S curve to side seam 6 to 8cm below pocket opening
  • draw the coin pocket (pink line) as a rectangle showing by 5 to 7cm from pocket opening. This pocket is parallel to pants grainline.

Make sure you have your fly drawn on front, otherwise draw it now: it is parallel to center front and 3cm away from it, stopping with a curve 2 to 4cm above hip level.
