Flared skirt with pleats and back bow

4.5/5

A simple yet unusual skirt: flared with pleats on front, has a draped waistband with bow on back!

You can sew it in a variety of fabrics, from plain cotton to silks or woolen fabric for colder season. I'm planning to make a version in full length in silk taffeta to attend a wedding!

Step 1

Trace a copy of your basic skirt. If you haven’t taken it yet, check our instructions to draft it here.

Flare front and back by 8 to 12cm on sides, then draw a parallel 2,5cm above waistline and one more 2,5cm below it to create the waistband.

Cut through the lines and separate waistband and skirt pieces.

Step 2

On skirt, square down from darts and cut through these slash lines to manipulate darts and adding volume for pleat.

Tape darts closed also on waistbands.

Step 3

See how waistbands became slightly curved?

Draw 3 parallel lines on back waistband to add volume for the drape.

Space skirt pieces by 10 to 16cm at top and twice the measurement at bottom.
