Front-twist long dress

4.5/5

Let's see the steps to draft the pattern of this evening dress worn by Scarlett Jonhasson.

It has a mermaid shape with a small train, this straps, a wide neckline and an eye catching front twist.

To replicate it, a medium weight silk satin would be perfect, but you can choose also other drapey fabrics (silk crepe, viscose...).

Start from a fitted basic block with zero or very little wearing ease (depending on how tight you like dresses and on your fabric).

Step 1

On back and front:

  • draw the new neckline (5-6cm above bust point on front, then at the armpit and 2-3cm below its line at center back)
  • draw the shoulder strap from the shoulder center to the shoulder tip
  • taper the skirt at knee (2-4cm) and flare at hem (5-7cm).

On back, shape the center to follow the back curve and draw the panels by flaring approx.10cm in each. Flare also center back and draw a short train (15-20cm).

On front, draw the slanted slash lines as shown in red.

Step 2

Trace the two back pieces separate and cut through the front neckline, shoulder strap and slash lines.

Step 3

You should get two separate pieces for front bodice: one is something like a side panel and one include both darts.

On the second one, draw the slash lines from dart apex to center front to manipulate the darts.
