Halter neck denim dress

4.5/5

Let's draft the pattern for this dress. The shape is quite basic but it has some flattering lines as the princess lines that create a flared skirt and the underbust cut.

You can sew it in any medium weight fabric - a very cool winter option would be corduroy, or you can vary from denim to gabardine, to crepe or faille if you want a more dressy option!

Step 1

To draft the pattern, trace a copy of your dress block with darts.

Lengthen it first, then flare at least 3 to 5cm at hemline.

Draw the straight neckline on back and halter neck on front, drawing a line from armpit to high shoulder point.

Step 2

On front, draw the underbust line and widen waist dart to make it 3cm wide at underbust.

Draw the slash line for manipulating shoulder dart ending 2 to 3cm sideways.

Step 3

Close shoulder dart on front manipulating it into the new slash line.

Square down from waist dart apexes to hemline and cut through the lines.

Separate all pieces: center back, side back panel, side front panel, center front.
