Halter neck dress with bias cut skirt

Style analysis: halter-neck, sleeveless gown that features a form-fitting design that accentuates the wearer’s figure. The neckline crosses at the front and ties around the neck, leaving the shoulders and upper back exposed. There is a small keyhole cutout below the crossover section of the neckline, adding a subtle detail to the bodice. The skirt falls to mid-calf length with a slight flare given by the bias cut, creating a flowing and elegant silhouette.

Fabric: silk satin and silk crepe would give the most luxury effect, but also other shiny, satin-like fabrics blended with polyester will work. A smooth and glossy finish of the fabric contributes to the dress's overall sophisticated and glamorous look.

Draft the pattern starting from a contoured dress - you can learn our method for drafting perfectly made to measure basic blocks (contoured ones, and the ones with wearing ease) and for fitting them in our basic blocks course/module 1.

Step 1

Trace back and front separate, then adjust length to mid calf.

Taper skirt by taking in 2 to 3cm from side seam at hemline, blending to zero at hips.

Mirror front to have it full, highlight underbust line.

Draw the slash line separating bodice from skirt:

  • measure 4cm up from waist on side seams
  • connect this point to underbust level in center front – the slash line is shaped as an arrow
  • make sure darts on front are 3cm wide at slash line
  • draw slash line on back, parallel to waistline and 4cm above it (see next step).
Step 2

Cut through the slash lines to separate bodices and skirts.

On front skirt draw a curved slash line starting from left side seam at hip level to hemline 5 to 8cm away from center front. Cut through the line.

Step 3

Now you have:

  • back bodice
  • back skirt
  • front bodice, redraw darts all ending to bust points so that they are ready to be manipulated
  • front skirt, square down from dart apexes to hemline and cut through the lines to close darts
  • side front panel.
