Halter neck maxi dress

A super cool maxi dress that can be dressed up or down and is very versatile. You can sew it in viscose, cotton or blends to have the coolest version, or poly blends for a non-ironing version perfect for traveling ;)

To draft the pattern, start from a contoured bodice - our method for drafting made to measure dresses is fully explained in module 1 of our basic blocks course - all details are here.

Step 1

Trace front and back separate, then adjust the length to ground and flare hemline by 15 to 25cm at sides, blending to zero somewhere halfway between waist and hip lines.

Cut through waist lines to separate bodice and skirt.

On skirt pieces, square down from dart apexes and cut through the lines to manipulate darts into volume at hemline.

Step 2

See how waist dart was closed on back skirt, adding volume to hemline.

On front, close dart first, then cut again through the line and add 8 to 14cm for pleat at waistline and the same measurement + the flare obtained by dart manipulation to hemline.

Trace a copy of the new patterns for the skirt.

Step 3

On back bodice, draw the new neckline squaring from center back to dart apex, then draing a very soft curve upwards to side seam, 1 to 3cm below armpit point.

On front, match the point at side below armpit, then draw a curve in direction to center front neckline. Draw a plunging V neckline starting approx 4cm from center front.
Still on front, draw a slash line for manipulating shoulder dart that starts 2 to 3cm on the side of shoulder dart and ends at bust point.
Draw also underbust line and widen waist dart so that it is 3cm wide at underbust.

Trace a copy of front, then cut through all bodice lines.
