High-low balloon gown

4.5/5

Let's draft the pattern for this interesting gown. The balloon effect is highlighted by high-low hemline and pleats at waistline. The bodice has bones and a plain panel construction.

To work on the pattern, start from a dress block with darts and zero wearing ease.

Step 1

First, trace a copy of front and back.

Adjust the length to the ground, then flare the skirt by 10 to 15cm on sides.

Cut through waistline to separate bodice and skirt.

Step 2

Get bodice. Draw underbust dart and change front waist dart so that it is 3cm wide at underbust.

Then draw the neckline on front (at least 5cm above bust point, 1cm below armpit) and on back.

Widen shoulder dart on front by 1cm at neckline.

Step 3

Cut through the lines to separate the pieces:

  • center back
  • side back panel
  • side front panel
  • center front, to be cut on fold.
Step 4

Get the skirt pieces and draw some evenly spaced slash lines on both of them.
