Jean with side buttoning

4.5/5

It's trouser season here in Milan as fall came very quickly and it is raining every other day. So, let's see how to draft the pattern for these interesting jeans that have a side closure.

Front and back extend past the center with a slanted panel that overlaps on side and has a single button.

Step 1

To draft the pattern, start from a basic trouser pattern with small wearing ease (as 2cm in total at waist) or zero wearing ease if you like pants to be tight and/or your fabric stretches.

First, adjust hem width by adding few cm on each side.

Step 2

Then draw the patch pockets:

  • on front, roughly halfway in the pattern width and approx 12cm below the waist
  • on back, closer to center for a more flattering look, and a little bigger than front ones
  • on side seam, draw pocket and flap.
Step 3

Trace a mirrored copy of front upper part and merge it at center.

Draw the front extension by measuring 4cm down from waist on the new side and 10cm on the old one, then draw the shape as shown.

Manipulate waist dart closed.

Step 6

Your nre pattern is ready! It includes:

  • front
  • back
  • front pocket
  • back pocket
  • side pocket + flap.
