Knot front midi dress

Let's see the details of this amazing front knot midi dress.

It features a front tie that knots and cinches the waist, a flared skirt and cuffed sleeves.

To draft the pattern of this midi dress, you need to start from a basic block with darts and full front. Wearing ease depends on your fabric and measurements, but we suggest at least 10cm across bust circumference. You will also need a matching sleeve.

You can learn our method for drafting perfectly made to measure basic blocks (contoured ones, and the ones with wearing ease) and for fitting them in our basic blocks course/module 1.

Step 1

On back, reduce the dart by shaping the center by 1-1,5cm (taper at upper back and at hip line). Draw the princess cut ending at armhole and manipulate the dart there, then square down to the hem and flare 4-6cm on each side. Flare from center back and side seam the same amount.

On front, flare the same amount from the sides, then draw the neckline and additional piece that create the knot: see them marked in red and light blue.

Step 2

Trace the two back pieces separately.

Center back (not on fold, as you need a zipper) and side back panel.

Step 3

Trace the pieces from front: left and right bodices and skirt.

On both bodices, draw a slanted line from center front on waist line to bust point – this is a slash line to manipulate the dart. Mark also the waistline as a slash line.

On skirt, square down from the dart apex on both sides.
