Knot t-shirt

Pattern characteristics: knot with gathers and pleat, asymmetric neckline

Style analysis: asymmetric top with knot on one shoulder and drape starting from the knot and going towards both shoulder and hemline

Fabric: cotton jersey or other knits with a good drape but not too flowy

Step 1

Start from a basic bodice with darts with zero wearing ease – you don’t need negative ease even though the fabric is stretchy because the top has a loose fit.

*Our method for drafting perfectly made to measure basic blocks, choosing wearing ease and for fitting them is included in our basic blocks course/module 1.

Mirror back and front, then on both of them:

  • draw the new hemline 12 to 15cm below waist
  • widen hemline by 1,5 to 2,5cm past each side seam (red line)
  • square up from hemline on right side up to 5cm below armpit level (purple line)
  • measure up 2,5cm from right shoulder point and redraw right shoulder lines7cm longer than the original ones (blue lines)
  • redraw the last 7cm of the new shoulder line dropping 1cm at shoulder end (orange line) to shape shoulder a bit.
Step 2

Now draw the right armholes (here marked in red) from new shoulder point to new armpit point at side seam. New armhole is quite flat.

Draw the new side seam as a parenthesis (marked in purple) taking in 1 to 1,5cm at waist to shape the top a bit.

Step 3

Now work on left side. On both back and front:

  • square up from hemline left outermost point to armpit level (matching to right side)
  • then draw the actual side seam taking in at waist as done on right side in previous step
  • draw the new shoulder line raising shoulder end by 2,5cm (but on this side do not lengthen shoulder line).
