Long dress with open back and cape

4.5/5

Draft the pattern for this amazing evening dress starting from a basic block for knits - notice that it works for stretch fabrics only.

It features a deep V neckline, open back and long cape-like sleeves.

We suggest to add stretch lining to all pieces, so that all seam allowances are concealed, and shoulder pads for a better effect. Also, do not forget to add staytape to back and front neckline to prevent them from stretching.

Step 1

Trace a copy of back and front (remember that they should have negative wearing ease if you work with knits) and discard darts from side seam.

Lengthen the hem up to the ground, then cut across waistline to split bodices and skirts.

Step 2

On front skirt, square down from bust point to the hem.

This is the slit line.

Step 3

On front bodice, manipulate the dart by drawing 2 slash lines from bust point:

  • one ending low in the armhole
  • one ending high in side seam.

Cut through both lines, then close most part of shoulder dart (see next step).
