Maxi dress with cape

Style analysis: maxi dress with cape sleeves. Cape is sewn in princess cuts and has ruffled edges. Dress has gathers at neckline and lots of volume at hemline. This full length version makes it formal and perfect for ceremonies, a high-low hemline could be an option for an easier piece.

Fabric: any medium weight fabric, cotton, viscose, polyester blends, silk satin or crepe...there are lots of possibility as long as the fabric is not sheer (there's no lining in the skirt) and has a drapey hand.

Draft the pattern by starting from a basic dress with darts and 10cm wearing ease on bust circumference and matching sleeve - you can learn our method for drafting made to measure patterns in our basic blocks course/module 1.

Step 1

Trace back and front separate and adjust length to ground.

Erase waist darts as they are not needed (dress is not fitted at waist) and flare 20cm from side seams, blending to zero at armpit.

Get front, square down from bust point to hemline and cut through the line. Tape shoulder dart closed.

Step 2

Get back and identify shoulder midpoint. Square down to hemline and cut through the line.

Step 3

Pivot at back shoulder to open on back hemline a volume that matches front one.
