Maxi dress with hoodie

Style analysis: gorgeous dress made by Valentino for Florence Pugh. It's a sequined gown with a sleek, fitted silhouette that hugs the body beautifully. It has a unique design with a deep cowl neckline that transitions into a hood, adding an elegant yet edgy touch to the look. The back is low and open, giving it a dramatic effect. The gown has a slight train, adding to its glamorous vibe. The sequins catch the light, creating a shimmering effect, and the fabric drapes gracefully over the body. It’s a blend of sophistication and boldness, perfect for a red-carpet event.

Fabric: sequins on the outside, silk satin on the inside. Velvet would look great too!

Step 1

Trace your contoured block (=basic dress with darts and zero wearing ease). You can find our method for drafting it here.

Start from back, lengthen to ground, then flare by 10cm at sides and 20 to 30cm at center back, blending at hips.

Lengthen new center back line by 30 to 40cm to create the train.

Erase waist dart and discard it:

  • half from center back, blending to zero at nape point and hip level
  • half from side seam, blending to zero at armpit and hip level.
Step 2

Now measure back neckline and note it down.

Redraw side seam straight up from waist point, raise 10 to 12cm from waist and draw the neckline to center back 3 to 5cm below waistline.

Draw the hemline starting at right angle both from center back and side seam and drawing a smooth curve.

Step 3

Cut through the lines, mark grainline perpendicular to original center back and let’s move to front.

Do not trash the upper back part you just removed!
