Maxi dress with open back

4.5/5

A perfect dress for summer! Quick to sew but stunning and breezy.

Pick a lightweight cotton (like popeline) or viscose and have fun sewing this maxi dress.

The pattern starts from a contoured block (block with darts and zero wearing ease).

Step 1

Start by tracing your contoured block, then draw underbust line and widen waist dart so that it is 3cm at underbust.

Lengthen skirt to ground, then flare 5 to 10cm from sides.

Cut through waistline to separate bodice and skirt.

Step 2

On bodice, draw a line 2cm below underbust line and cut through it, then draw front and back neckline and discard the upper parts.

On skirt, divide back waistline by 3 and square down slash lines, then repeat the same for front.

Step 3

So these are the pieces you get:

  • on back bodice and back waistband, manipulate darts closed
  • on both front and back skirts, open 10cm at top and 20cm at bottom
  • on front waistband close waist dart.
