Mermaid dress with wide neckline

Style analysis: paneled dress, mermaid skirt with train, square neckline on front and open back. Square shoulder, fitted sleeve that flares at hemline.

Fabric: medium weight crepe (in silk, polyester or blends) or other medium weight, flowy fabric with a little structure, as satin. Either non stretch or with small stretch (2 to 4%).

Draft the pattern starting from a basic dress with darts and 6cm ease on bust circumference.
You can learn our method for drafting perfectly made to measure basic blocks (contoured ones, and the ones with wearing ease) and for fitting them in our basic blocks course/module 1.

Step 1

Trace back and front separate, adjust length to ground.

Draw a parallel to knee line 10cm above it.

Step 2

Take in 2 or 3cm from side seams at this new line, blending to zero at hip level.

Flare 15 to 20cm from sides at hemline and connect to the new points at the parallel above knee.

Step 3

In center back, take in 2 to 3cm at the parallel above knee line and blend to zero at hips, then flare 30 to 40cm at hemline.
