Mermaid midi skirt

4.5/5

Style analysis: midi skirt with shaped waistband, no darts, square peplum that gives this asymmetrical piece a flowy, handkerchief hemline.

Fabric: lightweight and slightly sheer, adding to its delicate and ethereal look. Any lightweight fabric works - we would recommend especially crepe or satin with a little stretch for comfort.

Draft the pattern of a basic skirt - if you're new to our method, you can try our free pre-course to create a basic skirt pattern on your own measurements, then you can follow this tutorial to turn the basic pattern into this style!

Step 1

Trace back and front separate, then on both pieces draw a parallel 5cm below waistline.

Cut through the lines to separate skirt and waistband pieces. Tape darts closed on waistbands.

Adjust length to where the peplum seam should be (we suggest 5 to 10cm above knee). Taper 2cm at hemline and redraw side seams to hipline.

Step 2

Notice how waistband shape changed by closing darts.

Now discard the remaining part of darts from side seams.

Step 3

Measure hemline on back (labeled as A) and on front (B).
