Midi dress with cape-sleeve

4.5/5

A simple yet very elegant dress perfect for the mother of the bride ;)

You can sew it in a combination of different fabrics as the ones shown here - lace, crepe, satin - in pinkish or muted tones for a very sophisticated effect, or you can choose darker shades as blue according to your palette and personality.

To draft the pattern, start from a basic dress with darts and small wearing ease (depending on the fit you like better and the materials you are using). We suggest to sew a mockup first to make sure fit and proportions are the most flattering for your body.

Step 1

Trace a copy of back and front, then draw the boat neckline opening it by 3 to 5cm in center back, 4 to 6cm on shoulder line and 2 to 3cm in center front.

Draw also the high low hemline from center front to center back – this is where the flounce is sewn – we suggest keeping it approx 10cm above the knee at side seam, a couple cm longer in center back and about 10cm shorter in center front.
Tape slightly (0,5cm) the skirt at side seam where the flounce line is.

Step 2

Draw the flounce lines kind of parallel to the line you just drew.

First flounce can be 15 to 18cm long and second one is a little more than its double – but you can adjust these proportions to the style you prefer.

Step 3

Cut through the slash line to separate dress and flounces, then trace short and long flounces/ruffles separately.

Divide each piece by 4 to draw 3 evenly distributed slash lines – needed to add volume to hemline.
