Midi dress with cups and draped skirt

4.5/5

A midi dress with high-low asymmetric hemline and front drape with pleats.

The cup has a pleat coming from shoulder, then all details of cup with underwire.

We suggest sewing it in cotton or viscose for a daywear option, or silk or silk blends for a formal version.

To draft the pattern, start from a basic bodice with darts and zero to 2cm wearing ease.

Step 1

Start by tracing a copy of front and back separate and mirror both pieces for the asymmetric style.

Cut through waistline to separate bodice and skirt, then cut through center back skirt.

Square down from apex of left dart and cut through the slash line. Discard the volume of that dart.

Step 2

Keep all pieces in the right order and draw the asymmetric hemline.

Step 3

On both front pieces, draw slash lines for the drape. Pick matching points along the vertical line coming from dart (we suggest every 3 or 4cm), and pick other points along side seam (we suggest every 5 to 8cm).

Cut through the slash line from dart line towards side seams.

Step 12

Here are all pattern pieces:

  • 2 back skirt pieces
  • 2 front skirt pieces
  • back bodice
  • back shoulder strap
  • cup
  • center front, cut on fold
  • side front panel.
