Midi dress with flounce and drape

4.5/5

Let's draft the pattern for this midi dress. Flounce and side drape give a formal look, but you can sew a more casual version using a medium weight knit as ponte or interlock.

To draft the pattern, start from a basic block with darts and appropriate wearing ease (we suggest minimum 8cm at bust for non stretch, light to medium weight woven fabrics and 4 to 6cm ease at bust for medium weight knits).

Step 1

Start by tracing a full copy of basic front.

Step 2

Draw the right side panel this way:

  • start at armhole 4 to 5cm below shoulder point
  • pass 1 to 2cm to the right of bust point
  • draw a slightly slanted line in direction to the waist
  • square all the way down to the hem.

Redraw the waist dart onto the new slash line, then cut through the line.

Step 3

Separate front and side front panel.

On both of them, draw some evenly distributed slash lines (one is waistline, then 2 lines above it and 2 below) all the way to the side seam.

On main piece, close right shoulder dart by cutting a short line up to bust point.
