Midi dress with flounces

4.5/5

Style analysis: midi wrap dress (closure can be on front with hooks/buttons or a back invisible zipper), spaghetti straps, flounce at neckline and hemline.

Perfect fabric is a lightweight, breezy cotton, viscose or poly blend, extra romantic effect if you go for a toile de jouy, or paisley print as the one in the image.

Draft the pattern starting from your basic dress with darts and small wearing ease (like 4 to 6cm at bust and 4cm at waist).
Our method for drafting perfectly made to measure basic blocks (contoured ones, and the ones with wearing ease) and for fitting them in our basic blocks course/module 1.

Step 1

Trace back and front separate, then:

  • adjust length to mid calf
  • flare 8 to 14cm from side seams, blending to zero at hips
  • mirror front to have it full, then draw skirt hemline from right side seam to left dart apex.

Square down from right waist dart to hemline. Cut through the line and through waistlines.

Step 2

Get front and back skirts. Close waist darts and manipulate their volume at hemline.

On back, draw a line parallel to hemline 12 to 15cm above it.

On front, start from side seam at matching distance and blend to zero at waistline.

Cut through the lines to separate ruffles from main pieces.

Step 3

On both ruffle pieces, draw some slash lines perpendicular to hemline, evenly distributed. We suggest to draw them every 4 to 7cm, depending on the volume you want to get (the more slash lines, the more volume you can add).

Cut through the lines from hemline inwards – pay attention not to misplace the pieces.
