Midi dress with open back

4.5/5

Let's draft the pattern for this midi dress that features an interesting detail at bodice: it looks like a built-in vest with cape shoulder and front cutout.

To draft the pattern, start from a fitted dress (block with darts and zero to small wearing ease, we suggest max 4cm at bust). You also need a copy of matching basic sleeve.

We suggest sewing it in a medium weight woven fabric with little stretch.

Step 1

Trace front and back separate and adjust length to mid-calf.

Add 4cm to center back skirt for slit, then draw underbust line on both back and front and widen waist dart to 3cm at underbust, shaping it as a rocket.

Step 2

Cut through underbust line to separate bodice and skirt on back and front.

On front, draw the slash line for curved side panel ending at armhole, then draw a slash line from bust point to side panel for manipulating shoulder dart.

Step 3

Get the sleeve and cut it through middle line. Align sleeve to bodice matching notches section on back and front.
