Mini dress with cutouts

4.5/5

Let's draft the pattern for this trendy mini dress. It features sides and back cutouts, an A line skirt and short sleeves.

You can sew it in any lightweight fabric and it will give different results according to the material used: plain shirting cotton for an everyday dress, silk or silk blends for something a bit more formal.

It's a quick make with some interesting details.

To draft the pattern, start from a basic block with darts. If you don't have a basic block on your own measurements or want to try our technique, check here our new course starting on May 30th!

Step 1

Start from a copy of your basic block with darts but without ease. Widen bust circumference by 2cm on each side and drop armhole point by the same amount (or start from your block with 8cm ease at bust circumference).

Shorten the skirt 15cm above the knee (or to the measurement you like better) and flare by 5cm.

Step 2

On both back and front draw one parallel line above waistline and one below it, then cut through the lines.

Separate bodices, waistbands and skirts.

Step 3

On front, close darts on waistband pieces.

Cut through waist dart on bodice and close shoulder dart.

Square down from dart apex on skirt, cut through this line and close the dart.
