Mini dress with ruffled skirt

4.5/5

Let's see how to draft the pattern of this dress, perfect underneath a cozy cardigan for this spring.

It features a gathered bodice, a corset-like waistband, a ruffled skirt and 3/4 sleeves.

You can sew it in any lightweight, drapey fabric as cotton, silk or viscose, or their blends with polyester.

We suggest to stiffen the waistband with an interlining (fusible or not, your choice) to give more contrast between the structured part and the flowy one.

Step 1

Start from a basic block with darts.

On both back and front:

  • draw the new neckline by widening it at the shoulders,
  • draw the raglan lines from the neckline to the armhole,
  • draw the upper line of the waistband – straight on back, slanted upward on front,
  • mark the waistline,
  • draw two new slanted hemlines, one shorter and one longer.
Step 2

Cut through all the lines and separate the pieces.

Close the darts on waistbands and skirts, manipulate the shoulder dart to have it all at the underbust on front bodice, draw a slash line on back bodice as the red line you see.

Trace the skirt pieces + the ruffle pieces.

Step 3

Detail of front and back bodice and waistband.

Notice the dart manipulation:

  • darts are closed on the waistbands,
  • dart volume is all at the underbust on front bodice (shoulder dart was closed)
  • dart is erased on back bodice and through the slash line a new volume is added (for the gathering).
